Brigade OIC – Officer-In-Charge

The Brigade OIC serves as the commanding officer of the brigade. With staff assistance, is responsible for ensuring that all Brigade-level awards and recognition are presented to individual marines and Units in a timely manner. Receives reports and other communications directly from staff, or forwarded by the DOIC, and reports to the CO, Forces Command, SFMC, on a bi-monthly basis.

Brigade DOIC – Deputy Officer-In-Charge
The Brigade DOIC serves as the OIC’s adjutant. Duties include, but are not limited to, compiling information from reports regarding the participation of each marine in the brigade. This data is used to ensure that proper credit is given to the marine and the Unit toward awards in recognition of service and achievements. The DOIC will establish and maintain email contact with the other staff to assist them, and will summarize their activities in a monthly written update emailed to the OIC. Close email and/or phone contact with the OIC is essential in order to provide a clear flow of information.

Brigade NCOIC – Non-Commissioned Officer-In-Charge
(Brigade Sergeant Major, or BDE SGM)


The Brigade NCOIC serves as the Brigade SGM. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the enlisted marines needing help finding answers to their questions, and conveying enlisted concerns to the Brigade DOIC. A monthly written update of activities and concerns will be emailed to both the DOIC and OIC for discussion to resolve concerns in a timely manner.

Brigade Security Officer

The Brigade Security Officer’s duties include, but are not limited to, overseeing crowd supervision at group activities such as the Brigade Muster. In addition, the Security Officer coordinates Honor Guard and/or Color Guard duties at brigade events as needed. A monthly written update will be emailed to the DOIC, so progress of current projects can be evaluated.

Brigade Training Officer

The Brigade Training Officer assists marines in obtaining courses from the SFI Academy and the SFMC Academy. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, helping find resources and resolve issues for marines as problems arise. A monthly written update will be emailed to the DOIC, so progress of training can be evaluated.

Brigade Logistics Officer

The brigade’s logistics officer assists in making sure all required materials are delivered in a timely manner for events such as the Brigade Muster. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, planning and coordinating the location and time for activities such as panels at the Brigade Muster or other events. A monthly written update will be emailed to the DOIC, so progress of current projects can be evaluated.

Brigade Webmaster

The Brigade Webmaster maintains the brigade web site, both in its structure and with information updates in a timely manner. The Webmaster will maintain close email contact with the other staff in order to obtain this information quickly. The Webmaster shall also serve as one of the moderators of the 5th Brigade's email discussion list and help develop other brigade related materials as needed. A monthly written update will be emailed to the DOIC, summarizing current issues and concerns.

Information OfficerM

The Brigade Information Officer is responsible for forwarding communications from the SFMC leaders to the brigade’s email list. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, assisting Units in finding answers to any questions that arise and assisting Units in preparing reports or other communications. A monthly written update will be emailed to the DOIC, so progress can be evaluated.

Staff members (listed above) should email their report to the Brigade DOIC (with a cc to the Brigade OIC) on or before the last day of the month.

5BDE Email List

Each staff member, Battalion/Unit OIC and DOIC must maintain a subscription on the 5BDE email list and be able to respond to announcements placed on the list. This will provide a quick and effective way for us to disseminate information and discuss issues pertinent to the Brigade.
